The exclusive looks at the upcoming DC films are a massive draw for the DC Fandome. While many got to see a sneak peek at Wonder Woman 1984 and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, the Release The Snyder Cut panel was easily the most anticipated panel of the day. HBOMax released the first trailer of what Justice League would have looked like had Zack Snyder, the film’s original director, who walked away from it to respond to a family crisis.
During the panel, Snyder revealed that the Justice League would be four one-hour-long parts. There is also the possibility of releasing it as one film. He also said that they were working on a distribution deal for those who don’t have HBOMax.
The trailer, which features a cover of Hallelujah, has a bold opening with a look at Darkseid swinging a bludgeoning weapon towards the ground. Needless to say, there was massive devastation that followed after the impact. Other key scenes include the Justice League’s Hall of Justice in a pile of rubble, with Darkseid’s ships in the sky and parademons flying towards it.
There other key differences teased in the trailer that tell us what Snyder had envisioned for the film. Two of them include a lot more exposition for The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Unfortunately, the latter had his arc unjustly slashed, making him an inconsequential character. Luckily, the trailer a redemption for Cyborg. We get a small glimpse of a father and son relationship, with the addition of his life as a college football athlete.
The trailer also teased Flash’s story as an urban legend hero who uses his speed to save the lives of those in distress. We also get flashes (sorry I had to) of what it is like to see his powers from his perspective.
So while the additional footage, flashy visuals, and some new character designs will most assuredly make this the Justice League that Snyder had envisioned, it looks like the story will remain the same. Whether or not that is a good thing remains to be seen. It could be a case of style over substance again. Or it may be something worthwhile to watch.
Justice League The Snyder Cut will come four long years after the theatrical cut was released. Snyder was the original director of the film but had to walk away after a family tragedy. Joss Whedon (The Avengers) then stepped in to direct in his place and was there to make it lighter and more humorous. However, after its release, fans started a petition to get Warner Bros to release the original cut. Four years later, and it’s finally happening.
So let’s hope it lives up to their expectations.
Justice League stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Ray Fisher, Jason Momoa, and Ezra Miller.
