Roar into summer this year at the Los Angeles Zoo’s Roaring Nights music series. The fun begins Friday, July 24, 2015, from 7 to 11 pm, for ages 18 and up. It’s a wild and crazy night under the stars, where you’ll hear headliners such as Springtime Carnivore Greta Morgan and DJ Johnny Hawkes. Expect a good time hearing acclaimed Springtime Greta Morgan known for her “amazing pop pieces with intelligence.” She’s opened for artists such as One Republic, Fall Out Boy, and The All American Rejects. DJ Johnny Hawkes is “in-demand,” mixing a genre of dance music at exclusive events around the world, from clubs to fashion shows in Los Angeles, Hawaii, Canada, Thailand, and New Zealand, and has played at Sundance Film Festival parties, movie premieres and wrap parties.
L.A. Zoo’s Roaring Nights creates a howling good time with the city’s best food trucks, full-service bars, and a Game Zone featuring tabletop games, and life-size versions of Jenga and Kerplunk. Check out the zoo’s new jaguar home, hear pop-up zookeeper talks, animal encounters, or visit other animal habitats. At the “Animal Artistry Paint Party,” guests can express their creativity by painting a favorite animal (or whatever inspiration strikes them) on a small canvas to take home as a souvenir.
While I’m looking forward to catching the concerts and seeing the animals, it’s the food trucks that excite me! Foodies can enjoy food trucks such asCoolhaus, Komodo, Lobsta Truck, Mandoline Grill, Ragin Cajun, The Grilled Cheese Truck, Urban Oven, Baby’s Badass Burgers, Bakery Truck, Border Grill, Dogtown Dogs, India Jones, Rice Balls of Fire, Son of a Bun, The Hungry Nomad, The Bakery Truck and The Pudding Truck. The summer’s third Roaring Nights evening takes place on two nights July 24, and Aug. 21.
Sponsored by KCRW and Pasadena Magazine, this summer is sizzling. Aug. 21 features headliner band The Pac Men, performing all-80s hits including dance, rock, pop, new wave, and R&B. This eclectic, yet funky band’s motto is “BIG SONGS, BIG HAIR & BIG FUN.”
The Los Angeles Zoo is located at 5333 Zoo Drive in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park at the junction of the Ventura (134) and Golden State (5) freeways. Roaring Nights tickets, which are $20, or $17 for GLAZA members (age 18 and up with valid ID for both price levels), are available at www.lazoo.org/roaringnights/.
