Shrinky Dinks have been a much loved craft toy since 1973. According to Wikipedia they were invented by Kathryn Bloomberg of Brookfield, Wisconsin as a Cub Scout Project for her son! Kathryn was definitely an IT mom in my book! As a child in the 80’s I remember having Shrinky Dinks and loving them! Coloring them in and then watching them shrink in the oven was something I never grew bored with. It truly was like magic.
Shrinky Dinks are still around today and they graciously sent me some to review. I was so excited to share this magical craft with my daughters. We received their most popular product which is the Frosted Ruff N’Ready Shrinkable Plastic Sheets. The pack contained 10 plain- 8”x10” Sheets which retails for $5.50. First trace an image onto the paper or use a rubber stamp, draw an image freehand or even trace from a photo. The possibilities are really endless! Next color in your image with colored pencils, cut it out, then bake in the oven for 2-3 minutes! It is easy to tell when they are done because they will first curl up and then lay flat when they are finished. My daughters and I spent 2 hours one night tracing and coloring images that we printed off the computer! My three year old was a little young to cut the images out on her own but she had a great time coloring them in and watching them shrink! We made a sun, flower, anchor, a charm for a friend and a dancing bear for Dad! Everything shrinks to 1/3rd it’s original size and becomes 9 times thicker.
Before baking you can use a hole puncher and put a hole in your sheet. When it is done baking you can create charms for necklaces, bracelets and I even glued one on a barrette for Adeline!
I never knew that Shrinky Dinks sold blank sheets of paper and think it’s so cool! They also have ink jet paper so you can print out an image right from your computer. I remember having pre-cut kits when I was young and found that those are still available on the Shrinky Dinks Website for under $6!
Shrinky Dinks make a great craft project for kids of all ages (even adults). I was sad when we used our last sheet of paper and will be purchasing some more. These make a great rainy day activity or birthday gifts for boys and girls! Check out all the great Shrinky Dink products online. You can also find some great craft ideas on their website. Have fun =)
