Disney has released the first trailer for “Hollywood Stargirl,” the sequel to 2020 Disney+’s Stargirl. The jukebox musical sees Grace VanderWaal reprise her role as Stargirl Caraway, a silver-voiced teenager whose simple acts of kindness work magic in the lives of others. But her adventures and friendships are just as fleeting as her time in school. In the first film, her kindness exceeds her vocal and ukulele talents. But now, she joins her mother on a brand-new journey where she discovers that there’s much more to life than being on an adventure and the friendships she can forge with likeminded artists.
The trailer hints at a different kind of character arc for Stargirl, who was first introduced as this extroverted spark who’s unafraid of speaking her mind and sharing her unique talents. But the sequel sees the title character as a shy new girl in the big city. And while she connects with new friends, she discovers her idol Roxanne Martel (Uma Thurman), who’s now a reclusive idol, at a local jukebox joint. Though Roxanne recognizes her talent, she encourages Stargirl to stop covering songs and start “making her own kind of music.”
Here’s the official plot synopsis for “Hollywood Stargirl:”
Disney’s “Hollywood Stargirl” is a sequel to the 2020 Disney+ film about free spirit Stargirl Caraway (Grace VanderWaal), a silver-voiced teenager whose simple acts of kindness work magic in the lives of others. The upcoming film follows Stargirl’s journey out of Mica, Arizona and into a bigger world of music, dreams and possibilities. When her mother Ana (Judy Greer) is hired as the costume designer on a movie, they relocate to L.A., where Stargirl quickly becomes involved with an eclectic assortment of characters. They include aspiring filmmaking brothers Evan (Elijah Richardson) and Terrell (Tyrel Jackson Williams); Mr. Mitchell (Judd Hirsch), one of Stargirl’s neighbors; and Roxanne Martel (Uma Thurman), a musician Stargirl admires and encounters on her journey.
Returning as Stargirl, VanderWaal performs the original song “Figure It Out” she wrote for the film. It also stars Elijah Richardson, Uma Thurman, Judd Hirsch, Tyrel Jackson Williams, Al Madrigal, Sarayu Blue, Chris Williams, Nija Okoro, and more.
Julia Hart returns to direct. Hart & Jordan Horowitz wrote the original script, based on the original character from Jerry Spinelli’s best-selling book Stargirl. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, p.g.a. (“The Maze Runner” trilogy), Lee Stollman, p.g.a.(“All Together Now”) and Jordan Horowitz, p.g.a. (“La La Land”) are the producers, with Kristin Hahn, Nathan Kelly and Jerry Spinelli serving as executive producers.
“Hollywood Stargirl” debuts exclusively on Disney+ on June 3, 2022.
