One of the messages I took away from Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue is that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Heroes aren’t just the ones flying across movie screens, dressed in tight clothes and capes, rescuing the citizens who rely on them for their safety. In real life, super heroes are dressed in uniform, fighting for our freedom in far-off lands or storming into burning buildings when everyone runs away from the fire. Then there are the heroes who are dressed for a different kind of battle, the teachers who educate and guide our children. But, what about the Everyday Heroes who inspire us, give us hope and offers their unconditional love? Children, as cliche as it sounds, really are our future and good things truly do come in small packages. In this action film, Planes: Fire & Rescue’s Dusty is faced with the idea that he may never race again. We all have challenges in our lives but learning how to overcome them is key. Just like Dusty, my 7-year-old daughter is high-energy and is developing the skills she needs to handle challenges and obstacles. Dusty is a small crop duster by trade who becomes a world racer and eventually learns to be a fire fighter. What I love about my daughter is that sees herself in many roles; a firefighter just like her Grampy; a teacher just like her daddy; an artist like her Mom; an athlete like many of her relatives; a magician; a comedian. Boy, does this girl have jokes! I encourage her to do well in school and that she can become anything if she puts her mind to it. Who knows, maybe she’s a liberal arts major in the making but her abilities and curiosity inspire me. There’s so much to love about my daughter. She is my Everyday Hero. She’s a fantastic swimmer (seriously I can’t even do the doggie paddle) and she impresses me every time she slips into a pool. Her combination of skill, speed and her competitive streak will help her succeed. She’s also a strong gymnast, who can’t get enough of the high bars! My little girl has always been an early learner who spoke her first word at eleven months and has loved books since she was 5 months old! Sure, she’s my kid and my words may seem biased but her strengths are my gifts. She has inspired me to make improvements in my life. I want to learn how to swim, I have rekindled my love affair with books and her athleticism has moved me to get in shape. Her courage and brilliance have deeply affected me but what really makes her my hero is her smile. She looks for the good in people, in situations and truly loves being a kid. I often find myself taking things too seriously and I have forgotten how to live in the moment. She shows me how to not sweat the small stuff. Be heroes to each other! You never know whose life you will change with a smile or a small act of kindness. Disney Planes Fire & Rescue on Blu-ray and Digital HD is available on November 4th!
