Warner Bros. has just released the first trailer for ‘Crazy Rich Asians.’ Directed by Jon M. Chu, based on the Kevin Kwan novel of the same name, the film centers on Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) who accompanies her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Unbeknownst to her, Nick actually comes from a ridiculously wealthy family with a dark past and that every woman wants him.
You see, Rachel will use the trip to help her get in touch with her Asian roots. But she never knew that Nick was that wealthy. Thinking that a small adventure would be a trip to Queens, New York, not Singapore. However, she will find out that Nick’s mother Eleanor Sung-Young (Michelle Yeoh) will not embrace her as warmly. Despite her genuine attempts, Rachel is shunned and seen as nothing more than an unrefined Banana – yellow on the outside, white on the inside – who is doing nothing but trying to leech off Nick.
Despite Nick’s wealthy status, he does have some friends and family members who will try to help Rachel break down Eleanor’s old-fashioned way of thinking. And with the help of Goh Peik Lin (Awkwafina).
I am as about excited to see Crazy Rich Asians as anyone else can be. Yes, it touts an all-star Asian cast, but like Coco and Black Panther, it will use universal themes of love and family so that the general audience doesn’t feel alienated.
Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Ronny Chieng, and Harry Shum Jr. also star.
Crazy Rich Asians opens in theaters on August 17, 2018.
