What kid doesn’t like to dance? It’s the only stage in your life where being uncoordinated is actually cute. Kieran has some pretty impressive dance moves, so when we had the opportunity to check out Baby Loves Disco, how could we NOT go and strut her stuff? We attended the March 21st event at Le Poisson Rouge in Greenwich Village. Where in Manhattan can you find 3 hours of entertainment, food and beverages for you and your tot for $15 (per person)? This may be the only place. But beyond the great value, this event was so much fun we can’t wait to go again! On the way to the dance floor we stopped at the citibabes booth for a handmade necklace. Kieran had fun picking out the paper flowers for the necklace, and I left with a free day-pass, so it was a win-win for us. Once inside there was limbo, a dance contest and group dancing led by the DJ, MC Tah. He was great for the kids and kept the crowd engaged. Uninhibited kids and their parents grooved to disco and a fair amount of Michael Jackson. To keep the little ones further entertained, they had a bubble machine (always a winner) and a bin of egg shakers and scarves. My daughter had the most fun with the bubble machine and the limbo. How low could she go? It doesn’t get much lower than a commando crawl across the dance floor! Not bad for a 2.5 year old. Tasty snacks were provided by Whole Foods, although they were out of drinks for the kids during the early part of the last hour. They even had a full bar for the parents (not included in admission, of course). A “Chill Room” provided space away from the dance floor to play with toys or read books. Although, the location was in a room adjacent to the dance floor, so it wasn’t much of a quiet space.
I’m not sure if I missed a room, but it seemed like not all of the sponsors were visible at the event. I didn’t see any representation from TimeOut Kids NY and Moms Like Me. I also think the timing of the event is not ideal, at least for us. It ran from noon to 3pm, which just happens to eat up all of Kieran’s naptime. I’d do it again, though, as the smiles on her face are worth it. When Baby Loves Disco comes to your town, make sure you check it out for yourself. If you live in Manhattan make sure you buy your tickets at least a few days or a week ahead. They always sell-out so “at the door” tickets are generally not available.
