20th Century Studios has released the newest trailer for “Alien: Romulus.” Directed by Fede Alvarez (“Evil Dead,” “Don’t Breathe), the film promises this standalone sequel returns back to its sci-fi horror roots. And that’s a heavy emphasis on the horror.
While most of the Alien films have featured Ripley, “Alien: Romulus” focuses on a set set of characters. Though the premise says the characters are scavengers, the language makes it seem as though they are starving thieves who accept a job that could be their big ticket out of their depressing predicament. However, this crew doesn’t know what horrors that await them. And these horrors aren’t afraid to plant their eggs in their victim’s hearts and burst out of their chest.
It should be interesting to see how, other then where the film is placed chronologically, links to the franchise. Does all of the tech that this crew wants to steal belong to Weyland? One thing is for sure, a film like this is further proof of why I don’t want to visit space. Because in space, no one can hear you scream.
“Alien: Romulus” is the seventh installment of the long-running “Alien” franchise. Launched by Ridley Scott in 1979, the newest film is set between the events of the “Alien” and “Aliens.”
The film stars Cailee Spaeny (“Civil War”), David Jonsson (“Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy”), Archie Renaux (“Shadow and Bone”), Isabela Merced (“The Last of Us”), Spike Fearn (“Aftersun”), Aileen Wu.
Alvarez directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (“Don’t Breathe 2”) based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. “Alien: Romulus” is produced by Ridley Scott (“Napoleon”), who directed the original “Alien” and produced and directed the series’ entries “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant,” Michael Pruss (“Boston Strangler”), and Walter Hill (“Alien”), with Fede Alvarez, Elizabeth Cantillon (“Charlie’s Angels”), Brent O’Connor (“Bullet Train”), and Tom Moran (“Unstoppable”) serving as executive producers.
“Alien: Romulus” opens in theaters and IMAX on August 14, 2024.
