They are not a team. However, the first trailer for “The Marvels” shows that Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Kamala Kahn (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) need to learn to work together and sort out their powers to defeat a powerful new threat who is an unintended consequence from when Carol overthrew the Kree Empire in her MCU debut.
The trailer is more or less what we saw back when Marvel previewed footage at the D23 Expo. Perfectly played against the Beastie Boys’ awesome song “Intergalactic,” it all opens with a shot of SABER, a brand-new space station managed by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) – at least we think it’s him. He’s overseeing new operation where Monica investigates a mysterious energy source that is glowing outside of the space station and hovering over Earth’s orbit. However, when she reaches out, it reacts to her powers and as a result, she switches places with Kamala, who is excited that she is meeting Nick Fury. She even thinks that this is an Avengers test.
And so the trailer establishes that these entanglements are problematic for the three heroes whose powers are energy manipulation. Seeing how the intergalactic politics are currently destabilized thanks to Carol overthrowing the Kree Empire, these location swaps as a result of them using their powers could throw things into chaos.
As such, they’ll need to figure out how to work as a team. Even though there seems to be some tension between the three. Monica seems to hold a grudge toward Carol – which might have to do with the fact that she was left alone when her mother, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) died before Carol’s return in “Avengers: Endgame.” To make things worse, the two have to work with an Kamala, who is more than eager to fulfill her dreams of being an Avenger.
The trailer is pretty short but sets up the team dynamic between the three and how managing the swaps can be tricky. They even end with Kamala asking if they are a team and Monica saying they are not, with Carol confirming “they are not a team.”
“The Marvels” also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon.
