“Ron’s Gone Wrong” may center on the technological friendship between Barney (voice) and his B*Bot (voice), but its themes are grounded in a sense of reality. Though the film was a hit with critics, it didn’t seem to resonate on a commercial level. But maybe families will find a chance to see it this holiday as it hits home entertainment.
In the film, things go hilariously awry when Barney, a socially awkward middle-schooler, receives a malfunctioning, digitally connected device that’s supposed to be his “best friend out of the box.” In this action-packed animated story set against the backdrop of the social media age, a boy and his robot discover the wonderful messiness of true friendship.
Of course, an animated film like “Ron’s Gone Wrong” feels timely relevant in a day and age where many kids are glued to their screens. Though social media has its upsides, it can also be a toxic place. So the film represents that connection we have with our human friends and family and the technology that so many of us depend on.
Though the story may be easily accessible and simple, the animation really shines through as all of the intricate details from the hair and fabric to the B*Bot’s emotional display really pops on a 4K TV. ANd the Digital audio features a English Dolby Atmos and English 5.1 & 2.0 Dolby Digital that sounds clear no matter where you see it.
As for the Bonus Features, well this sone seems to be a bit lacking considering that there are only three items that the film has. Of course, there are many aspects like the Disney acquisition, the pandemic, and the film’s theaterical release that may have contributed to its limitations. That being said, if you are interested in EPK style featurettes without having to look for them online, then these might be the way to go.

Overall “Ron’s Gone Wrong” is a heartwarming animated tale of friendship and the connections that we share with others. No doubt that its animated styles will connect with a younger audience, but its deeper story should have an impact on everyone who watches it.
