Transformers 4: Age of Extinction is a whole lot of Transformers. At 165 minutes, the film contains a significant amount of sci-fi violence, explosions, epic war scenes between good and bad aliens on earth – a delicious recipe for the ultimate action film. The film picks up 4 years after Dark of the Moon, where the Autobots and the Decepticons battle and invade Chicago.
Want to know why the Dinosaurs are extinct? The movie’s theory is that the dinosaurs were wiped out by some not so nice Transformer aliens who have a plan to kill off mankind. The star of the film is Cade Yeager played by Mark Wahlberg. Cade is an inventor and owner of a robotic repair shop in Texas. He struggles to make ends meet for himself and his daughter Tessa, played by Nicola Peltz. The single-father/daughter relationship wasn’t totally believable but there was some funny banter between the two about her not dating until she’s 18.

Cade comes across a deteriorated semi-truck which he buys and hopes to fix and sell for parts. Instead he discovers that this isn’t any ol’ truck. It’s Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots who has been a fugitive since Dark of the Moon. Harold Attinger is the main antagonist in the film, a CIA agent who wants all Autobots destroyed. He partners up with the bad aliens as well as businessman Joshua Joyce (Titus Welliver) of Kinetic Solutions Incorporation, who has discovered “Transformium” and is making his own army of Transformers.

Poor Cade! I’m not sure what the bigger disruption is for him, uncovered Attinger and Joyce’s plot on destroying all Transformers, supporting Optimus Prime and his clan to achieve justice or discovering that his teenage daughter has a boyfriend.
Director Michael Bay takes us on an adventure with redesigned bots, an interesting storyline including a tease of the Transformers backstory as well as some of the best CGI and 3D I’ve seen in a while. Autobots, Decepticons and Dinobots were falling from the skies, summersaulting across the screen and it was mind blowing! Seriously who wouldn’t enjoy watching alien robots beating the crap out of each other? Plus, Optimus, Bumblebee, Leadfoot and Ratchet all get a reboot in this movie and their transformations are fierce!

Overall the film is entertaining, with fabulous special effects infused with Fast & Furious style cars, and some cheesy lines from the cast. Optimus did what he did best – transform! I have a soft spot for the robot who has a “soul”. Part of that soul is his voice actor, Peter Cullen. Cullen brings control and seriousness to the character and connects the past and present.
