This month my class and I had a great time celebrating Earth Month, thanks to PBS Kids. PBS Kids teamed up with the National Recreation and Park Association to encourage families to get outdoors and discover nature through on air programming and the release of a new web Property! My group of 4 year olds had a great time doing just that!
We started off the month decorating our metal planting tins and planting beans in them. We soaked our beans overnight and then planted them with our gravel and soil. Each day we took turns to ensure that the beans were getting enough sunlight and water. So far no sprouts yet but we know those seeds are growing! We will be sure to share a picture once we see some green!
With the weather warming up we were really able to get outdoors a lot more this month! We had so much fun taking nature walks and going on bug hunts. We also had our annual clean up day where we collected all the trash around the school! Check out how much we found!
The kids were also super excited to be able to start our rest time with some wonderful PBS DVDS which helped us continue along with our earth month theme!
Although the kids loved all of the DVD’S I have to say that The Wild Kratts Bugging out was our favorite with the boys and the girls!
Something that I haven’t checked out with my class yet but did with my 6 year old daughter is PBS Kids all-new web-original property Plum Landing, which premiers on Earth Day.
PLUM LANDING follows the adventures of Plum, a video game designer from the desolate Planet Blorb, who longs to experience nature. This cross-platform, digital adventure is designed to engage kids ages 6-9 in environmental science by using animated and live-action videos, hands-on activities, web games and an app.
We downloaded the free app and had so much fun completing the photo taking missions.
The free app, Plum’s Photo Hunt, is an educational photo-taking and sharing app designed to motivate kids to go outdoors and interact with nature. Kids can grab their friends and iDevice and head outdoors to complete more than 36 different missions. Plum’s Photo Hunt allows kids to learn and discover more in their own backyard!
I love that the app really gets the kids outside exploring! My daughter has been begging to borrow my phone all day to play it!
Happy Earth Day!
