Beauty Tips for Busy Moms AND Blistex Lipcare Giveaway (closed)

As a busy working mom, I love finding new products to make the morning beauty routine more effective. There are two things I never leave the house without–mascara and lipstick. I’ve been a long-time user of Blistex Complete Moisture under my lipstick, but was excited to recently try out their entire line and get the low down on some of their other products. I also recently had the opportunity to sit down with beauty expert Mickey Williams. She answered some of our burning questions on lip care and gave us some other beauty tips, too!

Beauty Expert, Mickey Wiliams

What are your favorite products to wear under lipstick? Over lipstick?

Working as a makeup artist for film and TV, I’ve learned that lipstick needs to be that of the “long wearing type.” Sometimes I just use a lip liner on lips to create a shape, but also fill in the entire lip with the desired color. After, I use an emollient balm on top that adds a bit of shine but mostly works at keeping the lips looking natural. When it comes to lips my go to is the Blistex brand. I love using Deep Renewal over liner. When using a basic lipstick, you can use the Blistex Lip Ointment as a primer. Let it sit on lips for about 30 seconds and then blot the extra away and it creates a perfect base for a long wearing lipstick look.

How do you recommend making smaller/thinner lips look more full?

I like using a highlighter- lighter than the skin tone right above where the bow of the lip is and then again right below the center of the bottom lip. Something shimmery not sparkly and on the silvery/pearlish side. I also take a lip liner that matches the exact shade of the lip and I recreate the fullness going slightly over the edges. Never wear a lipstick in a deep purple or chocolate. It will make your lips appear smaller.

What is your best tip for making your lipstick last without looking “cakey”?

Using a primer, and also touching up where it is needed and not all over the lip. I like the Blistex Lip Ointment as a primer before you apply your lip color. Apply all over lips and then wait about 30 seconds. Take away excess and then apply lipstick. Lips are fresh feeling and lipstick is primed to lips. Also, when touching up, use a brush to apply where color has faded or worn off. Do not reapply around the edges if color is still intact. Avoiding build up around the edges will keep lips looking fresh and color persistent throughout the lip.

Why is lip care so important?

I feel like our lips are so active. They kiss, talk, smile and eat. They are constantly at work. It’s also one of the first things we look at when meeting someone since we generally talk with them and the eyes naturally gravitate towards the mouth. If someone has a fever blister or they are severely chapped, it’s like we can’t take our eyes off of it when talking with them. We certainly do not want to kiss them.

When should we start protecting our lips? Any kid-friendly products you recommend?

As a child I remember my sister constantly having fever blisters and I was more the little girl who had the red, chapped inflammation around her lips. We both were very active children and it seemed my mother could not get ahead of our lip dilemmas. She started making lip care part of our ritual at wakeup and at bedtime. Right along with us brushing our teeth. A few great lip balms that are perfect for kids are Blistex Fruit Smoothies and Blistex Raspberry Lemonade Blast.

What are some of your favorite beauty trends for Fall and Winter? How about looking ahead to 2012 Spring and Summer?

We saw big bold colors for lips on the fall runways and really smoky dramatic eyes. Of course, as a makeup artist this is a favorite since it gives me so much creativity with clients. Spring 2012 runways were focused on the complete opposite, but still something we can have fun with. Spring 2012 was back to the nakeds with skin tone lips and beige and neutrals adorning eyes, cheeks, nails…you name it. Better Spring than Fall when we all could use a bit of color to our skin.

What one product do you recommend for moms?

New Blistex Revive & Restore is great for moms because it works fast and you have enough luster in the product to get a touch of sheen for a quick lip look. You also get all the benefits to your lips for when you need something preventative for keeping away the extreme chap and get a refreshing base so lips look healthy and feel smooth. Did I mention its under $3?

What other beauty tips do you have for busy moms?

Find multi-tasking products. Mom’s are true warriors who put everyone first and themselves last. Finding products that take care of multiple concerns in one bottle/container make it easier for mom to spend less time on herself and more focus time on the family. Not saying moms do not need “mom or me time,” but they rarely find that opportunity.

Final beauty tip?

My biggest beauty tip I have is to NEVER not clean your face before bedtime. I don’t care if you haven’t worn makeup all day. Your skin needs to be clean and treated with proper hydration and anti-oxidants before sleep. Keep it clean and your skin will thank you by being blemish free and glowing.

I learned why sunscreen is so important for our lips. Lips have little or no melanin, which is the natural skin pigment that leeps out the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

My “Lip-Tip” is to always use use lip ointment before applying lipstick and to always carry lip ointment in ones purse.
