In a move that won’t shock anyone, Disney is re-releasing a remastered version of James Cameron’s Avatar ahead of the release of its sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water.” And to be sure that everyone goes and sees it, Disney has already pulled the first film off of its streaming platform Disney+.
To celebrate the rerelease, Disney has also dropped a new trailer for your viewing pleasure that has a tag that reads: “The Ultimate Adventure The Way It Was Meant To Be Seen.” Even Trudy Chacon (Michelle Rodriguez) chimes, “You should see your faces” as if the audiences watching the remastered version will have the same reaction as the characters seeing Pandora for the first time.
Written and directed by Academy Award® winner James Cameron, “Avatar” stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver. The film was produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau. Nominated for nine Academy Awards® including Best Picture and Best Director, the film won three Oscars®, for Best Cinematography, Production Design and Visual Effects.
Released in 2009, “Avatar” went on to break multiple box office records to become the highest-grossing movie of all time and the fastest movie to gross $1 billion through 2.5 billion. It also made 3D movies popular, so much so that other studios tried to copy its presentation for every one of their blockbuster films. It should be fun to see if the film still has the same visceral visual impact as when audiences saw it the first time in theaters.
While other films like Avengers: Endgame have made attempts to achieve those same top honors, other “Avatar” re-releases reclaimed the record.
And in addition to the new trailer, Disney has also released a high-quality image of a new poster featuring a close-up of Neytri (Zoe Saldana).
Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver also star.
Disney re-releases the remastered version of “Avatar” on September 23, 2022.
