Of all of the shows and characters that my children have loved over the years, few have had their staying power like that of the awesome SuperWHY and his friends. The newest SuperWHY DVD from PBS Kids called “Around the World Adventure” ($12.99) was met with squeals from my three-year-old when it arrived; she has loved SuperWHY for what feels like forever.
In the DVD, (which, incidentally, is the first to feature Woofster, the new book-loving puppy pal
with Dictionary Power, who made his debut on the series in fall 2011), viewers are treated to three different episodes: “Around the World Adventure”; “Naila and the Magic Map”; and “Jasper’s Cowboy Wish”. As usual, the SuperWHY episodes are well done, encouraging young children to use their imaginations and reinforcing the critical skills that they will use for reading: alphabet, word families, spelling, comprehension and vocabulary. Though they would be slightly embarrassed for me to say so, I caught my 7 and 9-year olds tuning in to the action-packed episodes on more than one occasion alongside their younger sister!
Each episode has a learning objective, and among the three episodes featured on this 90-minute DVD, young viewers learn about geography, explore the sound and looks of various letters, practice spelling and vocabulary (my daughter now knows the meanings of “quicksand”, “sphinx”, and “saddle”), learn about ancient Egypt and the Old West, and practice rhyming.
The DVD also features bonus materials, including interactive games, music videos, printable activity and coloring pages, as well as valuable resources for parents to use with their budding super readers at home.
SuperWHY’s “Around the World Adventure” is now available in stores and online and retails for $12.99. If you’ve got your own budding super reader, he or she will enjoy this DVD and tagging along on more of Super Why’s awesome learning adventures!
