It was at this year’s International Toy Fair that I found Laser Pegs and their newest entry to the toy marketplace – the National Geographic Model Sets. My five-year-old and seven year-old are really into building and puzzles lately so my interest was peaked.
Basically Laser Pegs are lighted construction sets. Each kit comes with a range of models to assemble out of Laser Pegs and clear or colorful construction pieces, and all the parts are easy to rearrange and swap.
We received the National Geographic Oceans 6 models in 1 Laser Peg Set. Based on the graphics outside the box the kids decided they wanted to begin by making the Manta Ray. Thankfully the instructions were inside the box. According to box, I can also download instructions and plans for building the other 5 models – the Hammerhead Shark, Deep Sea Explorer, Lanternfish, Tiger Shark and Clownfish.
We sat down and sorted the contents of the box – 10 Laser Pegs, 62 construction parts, a triangle power base and instructional manual. Recommended for ages 5+, my kids found this set to be challenging and required parent support. The clear construction parts required careful examination and counting to make sure we had the correct pieces for our model. Together the three of us completed our Manta Ray in 30 minutes. The best part for my kiddos was the illumination! Once connected to a power base, each Laser Pegs shape feeds the next to illuminate an enclosed LED so that the structure lights up as you build. Our Manta Ray served as a night light as they drifted happily off to sleep. The perfect ending to a fun project together.
The bonus is that these parts are modular and open-ended, and they can all be used with one another. Laser Pegs are also compatible with major brand construction toys so that you can bring light into other models.
Laser Pegs are 100% recyclable and environmentally friendly. Each power base can be used with a Laser Pegs AC Adapter or batteries. Each LED has an expected life of 11 years.
