I was happy to work with the Juice Products Association recently in spreading the word about 100% fruit juice. I always like to make sure the juice my daughters drink is 100% fruit juice and not just a juice “drink”, which is usually code word for a beverage that’s full of sugar. There are no added sugars in 100% juice; just the natural sugars found in whole fruit. 100% juices are also naturally nutritious or when fortified with nutrients like vitamin C, calcium and vitamin D. In 2012, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend consumption of several cups of fruits and vegetables per day, acknowledging that 100% juice can play a part in that allowance of fruit.
And looking beyond what the Nutrition Facts Panel says, all juices provide value beyond what is visible on the label. 100% juice is an ample source of phytonutrients—compounds found in fruits, vegetables and other plants that have disease-preventative and disease-fighting potential. Although this benefit is not listed on the label, there is a strong support for the role fruits and vegetables play in reducing disease risk.
There are many varieties of 100% juice on the market. In particular for this review, we were able to try: Juicy Juice, Very Fine, Welch’s, Mott’s, and Tree Top Organic. Each brand was received enthusiastically by my girls, and all of the flavors (apple, berry, grape, and citrus) were a hit.
So don’t forget about the juice this summer when you’re out enjoying the sun with your children! You’ll not only be aiding them in their nutrition, but they’ll think you’re pretty cool, too!
