Get Ready! It’s back on the first Saturday in May, but a little different. Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is back on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
The event that celebrates the comic book world returns to comic book shops across North America and around the globe. FCBD is built on one simple idea: there’s a comic out there for everyone. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just curious, you’ll find something you love among the incredible selection of titles for all ages and tastes. From super-heroes and science fiction to action/adventure and manga, Free Comic Book Day has a FREE comic for everyone!
Your local comic shop is more than a store; it’s the heart of the comic book community. Each shop has its own unique vibe, packed with comics, graphic novels, collectibles, and more. It’s the perfect place to discover new stories, meet fellow fans, celebrate pop culture together, and it’s also the perfect family outing for picking up some free comics or hanging out with friends.

It’s not all about comic books on FCBD. Some retailers will have photo ops, creator signings, costume contests, raffles, prizes, and other activities too. Every shop does different things at their FCBD event, so you never know what surprises you will find.
The event will have some changes to the event. Some noticeable, and some not so noticeable.
This year, the event has expanded to include local hobby and board game stores to join the celebration, too! While comic shops remain the heart of FCBD, this expansion means even more places to discover great stories and connect with your community.
It does not seem that there will be any FCBD-branded merchandise for 2026. This was affected when the original operator, Diamond Comic Distributors, filed for bankruptcy in January 2025, and Universal Distribution acquired the rights to Free Comic Book Day in late 2025.
A big change that you may notice is that a few publishers are missing from the FCBD lineup: Boom!, IDW, Dark Horse, Ten Speed, Ignition, Kondansha, Penguin Random House, Tokyopop, Webtoon, and Marvel. The distributors of these publishers could not come to an agreement with the new owners of Free Comic Book Day and would not be participating. However, they have created their own event, held on the same day as FCBD, which will be the very first Comics Giveaway Day.

Check with your local retailer to see if they are participating in both Free Comic Book Day and Comics Giveaway Day, and their policies on the free comics available. Retailers may be limiting the amount of books per person at the event, so that every person has a chance to pickup some free comics.
