The last couple of weekends of the Northeast’s bad weather have cancelled our usual Central Park activities, and created an urgency to find cool, new indoor family activities. Our latest find is a kid-friendly dance party in a West Village club produced by FUZIPOP!.
The founders of FUZIPOP!, are parents, DJ’s & music executives who have extensive backgrounds in electronic music, nightclub promotions, marketing and management, and they are answering the call from all kids who constantly demand, “We want to have a dance party!”
Last weekend, I took my seven year-old daughter and five year-old son to a FUZIPOP! party and we had blast. Walking downstairs into a darkened nightclub space decked out with tons of balloons, a full-on light show and pumping electronic music was a bit like falling through a rabbit hole for my kids. They were quiet at first, but then quickly got into the action once we hit the glo-in-the-dark accessories table. At $10 a pop for flashing eye glasses, it seemed steep but entirely made my son’s experience on the dance floor, as well as the walk home. He loved telling everyone that he was at a real dance party.
The highlights of our party experience were DJ and dance lessons. My children got a one-on-one tutorial in the DJ box and the opportunity to use the real equipment under the watchful eye of a professional DJ. Later, my daughter joined a group on the dance floor led by three professional dancers showing off some truly club-worthy moves.
The one low point of the party for us was the presence of two big birthday parties. It would be really cool to attend a birthday at the FUZIPOP! party, but since we came on our own my kids were feeling excluded from party attendees who were enjoying their own food, party favors and seating areas. It’s an intimate club so it would be difficult to separate the two and it does lend to the club-like experience. I think my solution would be to bring our own mini entourage to our next FUZIPOP! event 🙂
We rounded out our party experience with a little post-clubbing snack at a cool dairy bar a few doors down from the club. I highly recommend the frozen custard with gummy bears at 5 oz Factory. They certainly did not skimp on the gummy bears — our sugar high lasted the entire subway ride home! A successful weekend adventure!
