Every parent wants the best for their children. After I gave birth to my daughter almost six years ago, I scoured the internet for resources on just about every topic regarding parenting, developmental milestones, age-appropriate products, etc. I was a working mom and one of the scariest challenges for my husband and I was finding quality child care for my daughter when I returned to work. We wanted someone who would take care of our child as if she were her own. We wanted someone who helped us shape our daughter emotionally and developmentally and assured us that our daughter was safe and in a clean and nurturing environment. Fortunately, our child care provider came recommended to us. She was wonderful! My daughter is an early reader and to this day I credit her childcare provider/friend for her role in my daughter’s early years.
Children learn from day 1. Research shows that ninety percent of a child’s brain develops by age 5; these early years are critical to the development of how a child thinks, feels, acts, and interacts with others. First 5 LA is a non-profit organization who are dedicated to improving the lives of families throughout L.A. county.
However, according to First 5 LA, many parents are not aware that the first 5 years of their child’s life may determine the level of success they will reach as adults. First 5 LA launched their “Quality Child Care Lasts a Lifetime” campaign through Their Ready Set Grow program to help deliver this message and educate families regarding the life-long benefits of quality care for their little ones.
Parents have access to a comprehensive site of resources on how to choose quality child care at ReadySetGrowLa.org. They offer 5 detailed steps and a checklist that will assist you on your decision process. This site would’ve helped me tremendously when I was putting together my interview questions for prospective day care providers. Even though our child care provider came recommended we still had our concerns and we still met with other child care providers for comparison. As parents, it’s our responsibility to make sure that our children are well cared for and organizations such as First 5 LA help us along the way.
