This past weekend, we piled in our car and drove 1.5 hours south to check out the SEA LIFE™ Carlsbad Aquarium. They were having their Underwater Parks Day, and we wanted to check it out. The aquarium, although small, is really nice. All of the exhibits are at a level Kieran, my 3.5 year old, can easily see. Many are also at “stroller height”–I could wheel my infant right up to the glass so he could do some exploring of his own.
There were also several opportunities for Kieran to “crawl into the tank”, by going through a short tunnel and popping her head up into a globe inside the tank. She enjoyed this perspective of being surrounded by water and fish. Our favorite, by far, was “The Lost City of Atlantis”. Kieran loved the statues inside the exhibit. She also loved all of the Lego structures inside the exhibits, from a surfer girl to a scuba diver, and helped build a Lego “sand castle” outside. She kept commenting that “we don’t have enough Legos to make that!”–maybe one day, sweetie!
When we got to the tents set up for Underwater Parks Day, there were several activities that were age appropriate for Kieran (and older kids, too). Her favorite craft activity was building her own underwater habitat. It’s currently displayed in a prominent place on her dresser!
We had so much fun and will definitely be going back! On February 12, SEA LIFE™ Carlsbad Aquarium invites you to fall in love with the ocean. Did you know an octopus has three hearts, the male seahorse woos his lady with tail-twining and some male sharks show interest with a love-bite to the neck? These are just a few things guests can learn during the Aquarium’s Valentine’s Day celebration. Kids can build hand-crafted fishy-heart Valentines out of recycled paper and participate in other fun activities throughout the day. Activities are included in the price of Aquarium admission.
Kids 3–12 $13, Seniors 60+ $17; Adults $20. Parking $5. Visit www.sealifeus.com or call (760) 918-5346.

I’m so glad that Kieran had a great time at Underwater Parks Day! During all of that fun, I’m sure she learned about how special our ocean is too. If you had a chance to pick up a Grow-a-Note bookmark, remind her that she can plant it when she’s done with it….the seeds in the bookmark will eventually bloom into beautiful wildflowers. Hopefully we’ll see you both on February 12th for SEA of Love Valentine’s Day!
Thanks, Megan! Yes, we picked up a bookmark, too. Planning to plant it at Nana’s, as mommy has a Black Thumb!!
What fun! I love the stroller view. I wish more places would think of this.
