I must admit that my toy shopping is very nostalgic based. I had a pretty amazing childhood and want my kids to have the same opportunities to play with toys that allow them to escape into fantasy worlds and really tap into their vivid imaginations. Tonka trucks are one of those classic brands that I remember from my childhood. Never one to be pigeonholed by gender rules, I can remember my dolls driving Tonka trucks through sandboxes.
My little guy turns three soon. He loves trucks and construction vehicles. This weekend, he spent an hour filling and emptying dump trucks with driveway stones. I wonder what is going on in his little mind – building subways, skyscrapers and bridges, probably.

Made of hard plastic the trucks have held up to the tough indoor construction projects my son has put them through. He loves attaching, removing and reattaching the trailers. And then there is the classic pull-back feature that lets him race the trucks across our hardwood floors.
