Seeking an original gift this season for the little cooks in your life? The Official DC Superhero Cookbook is a great idea for girls or boys who follow the DC Comics superheroes and like to cook.
Published by Downtown Bookworks, the Official DC Superhero Cookbook has over 50 simple and tasty recipes and colorful photos on every page. The layout of the recipes is fun and easy for me to guide the kids as we prepare to cook. Each recipe includes a 1, 2 or 3 star for difficulty, a bright yellow box listing ingredients and a “How to Make It” step by step recipe box.
Many of the recipes provide shortcuts so that you can make the recipes from scratch or build upon something store bought. For example, the Superhero Cookies provide a step-by-step tutorial on making sugar cookies, but then also directs readers to the option of buying slice and bake cookie dough or ready-made cookies and then using the stencils in the book to put the Superman, Batman or Aquaman logos onto the cookies using colorful pigment powders. My kids think these cookies are the coolest!
In addition to the recipes, the Official DC Superhero Cookbook also give really cool ideas for creative lunchbox or party surprises. The really neat superhero stencils included in the book let you turn regular foods into ‘super duper’ treats. I made this awesome Superman grilled cheese sandwich that put a smile on my son’s face.
I took some poetic license but the basic inspiration for this Superman yogurt parfait, and my normally yogurt-adverse child devoured it! Amazing what a little food coloring and special presentation can do to entice a picky eater.
For the next play date, I’m planning to use their creative tip of using the pages of a colorful comic book to make paper cone holders for popcorn snacks. What an adorable, creative way to reuse comics!
