Swing Like A Monkey
By Harriet Ziefert and Illustrated by Simms Taback
Animals fascinate kids. They love to watch them, plus mimic their moves and sounds. Swing Like A Monkey is the perfect picture book to do as the animals do. Teagan and I try to move like the animals in the book. That usually turns out to be a funny family moment. Thankfully, none of you have to see me swinging like a monkey! Most of us will never get the opportunity to visit exotic animals in their natural habitats. Fortunately, we do get the chance to love and learn about them through books and visits to the zoo. Swing Like A Monkey is a colorful board book with simple illustrations that will get your little ones swinging! – Tee
These lift-the-flap board books are a great, short read for the little ones. These books follow a toucan and an owl through their habitats as each one greets other animals good morning or goodnight, respectively. The books feature glossy animals, which stand apart from the matte finish of the rest of the book (which caught the eyes of both my kids). To make it more interactive for my 3.5-year-old, we would count the animals under each flap. One thing I love about how these books are made is that the flaps are really sturdy. They are as thick as the pages on the board book, making them strong enough to withstand the tugs by my 1-year-old! -Heather
By Harriet Ziefert
As Spring approaches, the insects in the forest are coming out of their homes after a cold winter and are busy preparing for the biggest party of the year. Food is gathered by the ants, decorations are put up by the beetles and all the insects get dressed up for the big party. One little ant was upset when he saw the caterpillars munching away on leave rather than helping get ready for the party. Only later did little ant realize the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly was the reason they were having the party, and that eating was their way of getting ready. This change also coincides with the first day of Spring, and the lovely illustrations show that transformation from Winter as well. I love the advanced vocabulary that my daughter has picked up from the book, too—Chrysalis (the cocoon), metamorphosis and Vernal Equinox to name a few! -Heather
How Things Work in the Yard
By Lisa Campbell Ernst
Do your kids love to explore the world around them? Your inquisitive child will love this 4o page book! How Things Work In The Yard will answer the questions that inquiring minds want to know! Each page is filled with facts, cool illustrations and tips on items you’d find right in your backyard. Teagan’s favorite item in the book has to be a dandelion. She can’t pass one by without picking it and there’s a nice tip on how to make a dandelion chain. =) Earth Day is around the corner so celebrate nature in your backyard with this book! – Tee
