To kick in the summertime, Islands just launched a selection of season inspired menu items. We got invited to try out their new burgers, classic ice-cold drinks and appetizers that are just what you’d want after a long hot day out. Whether you’ve been outside basking in the sun or keeping cool away from it, Islands is just the place to chill-out over delicious eats and drinks. Here are our faves from what we got to taste!
Appetizer and Drinks
When we got to the Sherman Oaks location, it was actually pretty high up there in the temp but also very nice out so my boyfriend and I opted for patio seating in the shade. Our friendly server filled us in on the craft beers they had in season as my boyfriend was definitely feeling a darker ale or stout to pair with his food. One of the suggestions that was brought out was the Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Stout which our server explained was a new restaurant favorite. Just a sip and we were sold! It was a refreshing, cold stout with hints of peanut butter taste that wasn’t overbearing. I encouraged my boyfriend to get that as I had evil plans to steal sips here and there. I, however, opted for their classic Sunset Margarita as I was feeling something on ice with tequila. This signature drink was just what I wanted with fresh squeezed lime and orange juices, Grand Marnier mixed in with sweet and sour. We enjoyed our drinks over chips and their gooey and cheesy spinach and artichoke dip.
Since were invited to celebrate the new menu items, we decided to try their two new burgers as our main courses. (I already know the Bleunami, my go-to burger is awesome!) I decided on the Waimea Burger with their seasonal offering of Kalua pulled pork. Adding that tangy deliciousness atop the patty smothered in swiss cheese, caramelized onions and grilled pineapple was like eating the best from a tropical paradise in burger form. I really loved the combination of the cheese, pork and onions. Oh-and with a fresh minty rum mojito all that was missing was being on the beach. While my burger was sweet (even down to my sweet potato fries), my boyfriend got their new spicy burger the Hana Hou which he got well done with pepper jack cheese, and stacked with Borracho Beer Onions (caramelized and simmered in beer! Yum!) and spicy Machete Aioli. He enjoyed that it was just the right amount of spicy that doesn’t burn your mouth and leaves your able to crave the next bite.
Even though we knew food coma was imminent we went for a dessert because who can resist chocolatey goodness? After debating between the two mos popular desserts, we went for the Fudge Brownie (Sorry Kona Pie, next time!). It tasted like it came right out of the oven, warm and melty but topped with Vanilla ice cream and whip cream that balanced out the richness. We tried our best to eat all of it and if we could have developed another set of tummies we would have devoured the last couple bites.
Family tip! Diners under 12 can order from Gremmie Menu!
